You must read this!
So I usually don't send BlueMusings out this frequently, but I just finished reading a book I want everyone to read.
Yes, I am a book geek and when I find something I love this much, I have to share it. The book is CROOKS AND STRAIGHTS by South African writer Masha du Toit, who I have come to know via google plus.
I'd been hearing good things about this story for some time, but it took me until now to get to reading it.
You could call it a YA fantasy book. Sure. There is magic and a young teenaged protagonist. But it's really part modern fairy tale, part urban fantasy, and part magical realism.
It reminded me of what you might get if you mixed the coming of age essence of A WRINKLE IN TIME with the ethereal and painful beauty of PAN'S LABYRINTH. Quite honestly, this goes as one of my top reads of 2015. And thankfully, there's a sequel. (WOLF LOGIC)
The writing is effortless. du Toit never feels like she needs to explain the mythology - and it's not the familiar landscape of European fairy tales - she simply immerses us in it and I happily dove in. The book is also filled with her delightful illustrations.
Seriously. Read this book.
You can get CROOKS AND STRAIGHTS on Amazon, where it is available in eBook and paperback editions.
