I know I usually recommend books in my favorite genres: science fiction, fantasy, magic realism, and thrillers. But this time, I'm recommending a non-fiction book that's been available for some time, but I only recently read.
It's KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL by Anthony Bourdain.
I have been a fan of Bordain's work for some time and Parts Unknown - his part cooking, part political, part cultural deep dive show - was something my family enjoyed watching together.
I have done some international traveling (and hope to do more), including to places most Western tourists don't typically get to, and have long understood that culture is very much carried in the food.
He died just about a year ago and it was one of the few celebrity deaths that hit me in a personal way. I'm still not exactly sure why.
The book is a wild ride through the inner workings of restaurants, but is also along the way, a glimpse of a fragile, driven man utterly in love with the world of food.
